Senior Visual Designer

Design · Oakland, California
Department Design
Employment Type Full-Time

Message Lab, an award winning content agency with a specialization in brand journalism, is looking for a senior visual designer who can help us conceive and execute ambitiously engaging storytelling and lead our efforts to create editorial experiences.

Our senior visual designer will work within the design department to execute design concepts across many projects. You’re a strong communicator who values being part of a team. You’re comfortable being in a fast paced environment, exercising your expertise on design principles, and proposing a variety of executions for the best way to tell a story. You care about the details, the pixels, hex codes, file formats and the grid. You geek out over motion design,  data viz, illustration and interactivity. Most importantly, you believe in the power of combining design with the written word to move people.

Your primary responsibility will be to find the best way to visually bring stories to life. You will be working with our design team to ideate and execute concepts. These concepts could be in the form of animation, illustrations, data visualization, video or photography. You should understand and have experience in After Effects to bring your ideas to life with motion.

We have a strong point of view for how editorial, design and data work together in the service of a singular goal. It starts with identifying great stories that support the ideas our clients care about and bringing them to life in a range of formats. As a senior designer, you’ll be expected to work closely with a team of designers, strategists,  journalists and editors with backgrounds at the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg and other top publications.

Our headquarters are in Oakland, California, but the job can be remote or based out of satellite offices in Boston or Portland, Oregon.

You must have:

  • 5+ years of design experience (preferably agency or editorial) and a solid understanding of design principles and key tools.
    • Experience in concept and design for storytelling
    • Experience in branding, visual identity and design systems
    • A strong understanding the web design process, from sitemaps to wireframes to full visual design and an understanding of design systems
  • Strong conceptual thinking: Designers are expected to not just execute teammates’ ideas but also be a part of the initial creative process.
  • The ability to lead projects  – to come up with great ideas and work with other designers to see them through to the finish.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills: You work both autonomously and as part of a team – you’ll need to do both here, so we need people who can get their marching orders and go as well as communicate and collaborate.
  • Highly organized and with strong attention to detail.
  • A book of relevant work that leaps off the screen.

Skills & Requirements:

  • High level of proficiency in Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator and Google Slides (Plus if you know Indesign, Sketch, Principle)
  • Good level of proficiency in After Effects
  • Strong understanding of file types and optimization for the web (jpgs vs. svgs vs. pngs)
  • Familiarity working with developers to execute on web designs and can at times get into Wordpress and do layouts
  • Ability to effectively manage your time around multiple projects
  • Ability to present and execute your ideas

What you can expect:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Benefits including medical, dental, vision, and paid time off
  • A flexible work from home policy as needed
  • A growing team that is motivated to create high quality, industry leading work
  • In post COVID times, a fun environment that includes lots of laughing, outings, and camaraderie
